Automatic Speed Limiters?

The news this morning is carrying a story about the Government wanting to introduce automatic speed controls for cars. Great idea for those who like being controlled but maybe investing in decent public transport would save more injuries I suspect.

The thing with road safety is that it is a moveable picture. Vehicles and pedestrians colliding is a bad thing but it isn’t managed by removing a single factor. Sometimes speeds can be inappropriate even under legal speed limits!

Add in crap drivers, blind drivers and sleepy drivers and things get bad. Worse things come when you find lorries overtaking lorries at a differential speed of 0.5 mph.

I think I’m a pretty safe driver. I get my eyes checked, I have regular additional training. I drive sensibly at speeds appropriate for the road conditions. I mostly stick to speed limits.

There are people who drive at inappropriate speeds but they escape punishment through cuts in Policing and a reliance on revenue generation from fixed cameras.

Now someone wants to dictate how fast I can drive. Maybe I should dictate who forms the next Government …
