Apple Sauce

Take a Bramley apple. Peel and chop. Sprinkle with cinammon and cloves, both ground. Microwave and mix to make into a sauce. Add maple syrup to sweeten. Enjoy with roast pork.

Brussel Sprouts

Why does this humble vegetable arouse such passions? I know that there is part of the population that is predisposed to hate the taste of brassicas, but why do they hold such sway? A young, fresh sprout properly prepared is a delight, but I suspect I’m in the minority. How hard is it to work [...]

Bratislava

Recommended restaurant – Papparazzi in the old town. Quality Italian food for about twenty five pounds per head all in. Brilliant!

Takeaway food

You know when you get the urge for a takeaway? Nothing else will do. A Chinese Takeaway somehow hits the spot, which is good. Except when it isn’t. Normally, we use Summies House in Ryton. Tonight they were closed so in a true hunter-gatherer regression I went searching. One purchase later and it comes back [...]

Another recommendation

On the road between Aberyswyth and Cardigan there is a little place called Tanygroes. In the middle, set back a bit so that it is difficult to see when heading South is the Emlyn Cafe. £5 gets you a big breakfast (bacon, sausage, spuds, toms, mushrooms, eggs, fried bread, toast) and a pot of tea. [...]

Another restaurant recommendation

Coconut Lagoon in Kenilworth do an excellent set meal ‘feast’ for £22.50 per head (minimum 4 people). The restaurant is in the Peacock Hotel and offers a range of regional Indian dishes. The feasts (mild to medium or medium to spicy) offer a range of tastes and styles to satisfy most tastes. Especially good was [...]

A Balanced Meal

Protein, carbohydrate, fat, fibre, etc. So is a Quarter Pound burger, served with a lump of lettuce, tomato and gherkin heading towards some balance? Throw in some cheese and chips (that’s 4 veggies) and onion rings (that’s 5) and you must be somewhere close. Personally, I like flavoured water with hops, etc. so a few [...]

Cheese on Toast

Not something I eat often these days, but what a treat when I do. How can cheese on toast manage to taste so much better than a cheese sandwich or toastie? Today it is Hovis Best of Both Thick Sliced with Cathedral City Cheddar. Not the most exotic but incredibly satisfying.

Fake Cheese Alert (with pig connections)

I was having lunch yesterday in a delightful garden in Munich. Assorted pig cuts served with sauerkraut, mashed spud and gravy. And what looked to me like cheese. I like cheese. I like cheese a lot. So I had some mash, then tried a handy fork full of cheese. Not a full fork but a [...]

Food From The Past

Tinned fruit salad, complete with small chunks and pink cherry halves. It doesn’t make an appropriate breakfast no matter how it’s dressed up, but it does transport you back to the mid-70′s in an instant. A bit like a canned time machine.
