Over the past couple of days I’ve been having an exchange of views on Twitter with an MP. He supports the eviction of Dale Farm because ‘they broke the planning regulations’.

Eviction will see a community damaged, families removed from their homes and forced to leave the area they live in because the Council haven’t got sufficient provision for travellers in the area.

The council don’t have a contingency despite their efforts to get the eviction allowed over a prolonged period but the MP (from a constituency several hundred miles away) can’t see a problem with this.

So during the exchange he claims I’m ranting (difficult in 140 characters) bit the real problem arises when I notice another tweet in his timeline via another tweetee. In this he criticises Rowan Williams for politicising the Church of England. He muses on the possibility of having an election for the Archbish by ‘all Christians’ so I ask him if he’s an Anglican. A question to far as he got quite upset.

He didn’t answer but did see me as obsessive. I don’t think he got the points that eviction of families is hardly a Christian act, the Bible is full of political acts and that breaking a planning law, being evicted and then being forced to break another whilst the Council ignore their legal responsibilities is hardly the best way to carry on.

The point of this long ramble is that I wonder why MP’s engage with Twitter. It’s a platform for views and opinions but one that needs engagement rather than ‘stop ranting’, ‘I won’t answer’ or simplistic ‘law breaking deserves punishment’.

Too often I see MP’s using it as a tool for being snide or sniping and hiding. If they want to engage with social media then they need to get smarter and more involved and especially not duck the simple questions.

I’m not a Catholic so a visit by the Pope to the UK was a source of interest and amusement. Watching the coverage made me smile and wince in almost equal measure.

The Pope in this version is not someone I admire. I find some of his previous actions nasty and inexcusable. I also find that his views on religion and social issues are a long way from mine. But at the sasme time I really felt uneasy about the rampant atheists who went mad over the visit.

I’m a Christian. I think that the Gospel has much to offer anyone. I believe Atheists are incorrect and missing something. That’s what I think.

I believe that God created everything in some timescale that was longer than 7 days. It seems sensible to me that the creation stories written in humanity are stories to explain where we came from. A bit like the start of many books, plays and films.

Not accurate but valuable. Hey, Dad, where do we come from? Let me tell you a story, kid. You know? Not accurate but enough for people to get. Like the Darwinism taught in schools – enough to get the gist but not enough to break my mind open.

I also can’t see that the Bible has everthing correct in terms of life rules. The mildew laws are ridiculous if you have bleach and a toothbrush …

Anyway, I am a 21st century, reasonably educated bloke. I can see right from wrong most of the time.

So when atheists start to tell me I’m wrong because I believe something I get a bit hacked off. Because they would be as hacked off if I started to tell them they were wrong. Belief in God or non-belief in God has to be a personal choice. It’s something for me to decide. If I’m wrong then I pay the price. If I’m right then all well and good.
I’d be happier if we all showed more respect and tolerance for different views because if we have to agree on one set of beliefs I won’t be happy unless they are mine.

I expect we all feel the same.

The science is getting close to certain that human development is adversly affecting the climate. People are pretty certain that development is A Good Thing. Development takes energy which releases carbon dioxide. Buildings generate carbon dioxide. Cows do as well. I don’t have an answer to the problem of development and climate but I know that life without cars, planes, central heating, etc will be horrible.

So we need energy. The costs are borne by private companies who want a return. We want cheap energy. Reliable energy. In some case fun energy but we all want it. Either it is too hot or too cold but with energy that is fixed. We want development and drugs and education which means energy. We also want it climate friendly.

It isn’t an easy balance and it is made worse by campaigners simplifying everything. No coal power is fine except that nukes are scary and wind is variable. Now people are questioning gas as a viable long term energy source. Well great.

But try looking at all sides and the. Make your mind up because you can’t build a power plant out of Lego in a day.

Wether by choice or circumstance we mix and switch and move for a little space or a seat or a conversation or to avoid a smell or a look or a threat.

But then someday you see things that make you look again.

Today it was a little black dress at 8.30am looking at least 8 hours past it’s donning. Then this afternoon saw a bloke wearing a pair of red dress shorts.

Now it’s thinkers and readers and that is truly a sight for sore eyes especially as there is an unoccupied seat to
my right.

Happy days!

Although Ross and Brand may have been ill-advised to make the phone calls to Andrew Sachs surely this has gone far enough?

The initial show raised TWO complaints. That is TWO. Count them – 1 2 Stop.

That’s it. And then the Daily/ Sunday Mail get the story and off they go and the next thing you know there are THOUSANDS of complaints. How dumb can you get – being offended about something that you’ve only heard about because you’ve been (a) told about it and (b) been instructed into being offended?

Now, the fact that the offended Old Man’s grand daughter had the lack of sense to indulge in a night of excess with Brand is being overlooked. That should be between him and her and if they can’t resolve it amicably then that’s life. It happens. Sachs has accepted the apology so surely it’s time to move on?

Except now there must be someone RESPONSIBLE. And they should PAY. Brand is now even more notorious than before. He has more material than before. He is, hopefully, funnier than before. Ross has lost 3 months work and a million quid.

But the Beeb have lost a good member of the management. Is any Controller aware of what people are broadcasting? I doubt it. And in the analysis, the programme only generated TWO complaints – which isn’t many. I could complain about a programme, get a mate to do the same and then that would be similar. Until, of course, the Press – bastion of fair coverage and good taste (Mosley, anyone? Freddie Starr? Hillsborough??? I’m sure you get the picture) – get hold of the story and suddenly – suddenly it’s a story.

Well, it is over. So please, can we leave this alone, start to get back to brave broadcasting and please stop the talk show coverage because I’ve heard far too many opinions about the story and little fact.

And if anyone from the Beeb reads this, please get Danny Baker back on 606 permanently because he is great!
